The four Quartiere of Montalcino, Pianello, Travaglio, Ruga and Borghetto celebrate the ancient archery skills of the Montalcinesi at two annual festivals.

La Sagra del Tordo -The Festival of the Thrush

On the last weekend every October, the most important cultural event in the Montalcino calendar takes place.  Visitors arrive from all over Italy, from other countries in Europe, and even internationally to witness this passionate festival.

This festival includes a thrilling archery tournament displaying the ancient skills of the archers from each Quartiere, Trescone dancing in the Piazza, weekend feasting on delicious Tuscan cuisine in the fortress keep, and a spectacular historical pageant which wanders through the village, accompanying the archers to the archery range.

Apertura delle Cacce  - The Opening of the Hunt Festival

On the second weekend of August, this festival opens the annual archery tournaments and is a forerunner to the Sagra, which is staged in October.

The Apertura festival is less known than the Sagra because it is still regarded as a village festival for the enjoyment of the village citizens. Nevertheless, many visitors arrive to witness the thrilling archery tournament and historical pageant through the village.
