Standard of Montalcino

 

The antique crest of Montalcino – a pyramid of hills protected by the spreading arms of an oak tree - symbolises the unity and security of the village.

The most ancient settlement of Montalcino is Pianello territory – Sant’ Angelo in Castelvecchio.  Furthest from the roads which bring traffic to Montalcino, the medieval ambience and tranquillity of Pianello is well preserved. A huddle of medieval houses tumble down the side of the hill and look towards the stunning Orcia Valley. The name Sant’ Angelo has come down to us from the Longobards who reigned in Tuscany around the 700’s and who chose Saint Michael the Archangel as their protector, and as a symbol of their strength and power.

Pianello is one of four quarters, or quartiere, of Montalcino. Our colours are white and blue, touched with red.  San Michele Arcangelo appears on the scarf and banner of Pianello in keeping with our ancient territorial tradition.

 

We are attentive to our origins and we proudly preserve the historical protection of our founders.

Symbol of strength, power and victory!

Our President is elected for a four year term along with a number of Office Bearers who form the Consiglio to guide and direct the activities of the Quartiere.

The most important village events are in summer and autumn. Both the Apertura delle Cacce and La Sagra del Tordo encompass a thrilling archery tournament between the four Quartiere. We train a team of archers, including a junior squad, and maintain an archery range just outside the walls.

 

At Pianello, we have proudly celebrated 19 victories at the annual Archery Tournaments.
